FREE WIND DOMINATES THE FIRST VERSION OF CAP CANA REGATTA
Captain Eduardo Verdeja, Maria López, Felix Payano and Alain Dubus took the top spot in the “C” Cruising category.
With the enthusiastic participation of Dominican, French, Spanish and Puerto Rican racing fleets, the Cap Cana Regatta was successfully held last weekend from the 3rd to the 5th of March in its first edition, to set a new milestone as an excellent destination for sailing competitions.
On a voyage along the coast of Cap Cana, and under challenging wind conditions, 9 sailboats raced in a constant and fierce competition where the Free Wind sailing vessel dominated the regatta. The renowned sailboat Shiraz, headed by Hector Duval and an excellent crew of sailors, took the second place to leave Bajamar of the Dominican Navy in third place and captained by the Sub-lieutenant Rafael Martínez, which his crew executed an excellent regatta . This circuit of races marked by its leader Andres Santana besides having been a challenge for the participants, comprised spectacular views of this region extreme beauty.
The Cap Cana Regatta is the second leg of the DR Sailing Challenge regatta which has been held since January on the southern and eastern coasts of the Dominican Republic and is organized by ADVELCO (Asociación de Veleros de Competencia Océanica), WT Events, Abordo Magazine with the endorsement of the Dominican Sailing Federation, becoming a relevant activity of nautical sports and regattas of our island.
Hector Duval, Director of the DR Sailing Challenge, took the opportunity to inform the next events that follow the circuit highlighting the Regatta Abordo from March 17 to 19; Samana Bay Spring Regatta from April 7th to the 9th, culminating with the Navy of the Dominican Republic Regatta, in commemoration of its 173rd anniversary, from April 21 to 23, the latter in Marina Puerto Bahia, Samana.
Alma Taveras, of the Organizing Committee and Director of WT Planner Box, said that the Cap Cana Regatta marked a new venue in world sailing where by 2018 the focus will be to attract more Dominican participation in different categories of sailboats and a large group of sailboats from all over the globe, with the Cap Cana coasts and its marina as an excellent sailing destination.
The event fulfilled a wide program of social activities that included a Welcome Cocktail, Awards Banquet and BBQ Party, where all the participants and guests enjoyed a pleasant evening; to these social events was added the attractive prizes that accompanied the trophies and many surprises for the participants.
