RETIRED SLUGGER DAVID ORTIZ’S GOLF TOURNAMENT TO BRING BIG NAMES TO D.R.

David Ortiz, who retired from the Big Leagues last month, said Tuesday that his charity golf tournament in the Dominican Republic, to be held Dec. 1-4, would have big-name ballplayers, including CC Sabathia, Robinson Cano and Jose Bautista, in the field.

The tournament will be held at the Punta Espada Golf Club in La Altagracia’s Cap Cana resort complex.

Current Major League players Edwin Encarnacion and Nelson Cruz will be attending, along with Pedro Martinez, who was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York, in 2015, former NBA star Scottie Pippen and retired ballplayers Carlos Delgado and Andres Galarraga.

The 9th Annual David Ortiz Celebrity Golf Classic is organized by the David Ortiz Children’s Fund, which helps kids with heart problems.

Ortiz said that he would continue to put on the tournament because the event provided “very special satisfaction.”

“From now on, these will be my home runs,” the 41-year-old Ortiz, known as “Big Papi,” said.

Ortiz, whose 541 career home runs put him in the No. 17 spot on the all-time homer list, played for the Minnesota Twins and Boston Red Sox during his 19-year Major League career.
